 Genre Research: Thriller 

• Common camera angles in the genre: Includes low angles, high angles, birds-eye view, Dutch angles, over the shoulder shots, and close up shots. In thriller, usual camera movements include tracking shots, a shaky cam, as well as slow pull out/push in shots. All helping to induce feelings of anxiety, suspense, or disorientation. 

• Common mis en scene in the genre: Dark or muted colors for costumes or professional uniformed looks. Minimal lighting to create heavy shadows, harsh directional lighting to create unease, or flickering lights. Acting can be subtle facial expressions or tense body language. Makeup in thriller movies tends to be sweaty or smudged to signify danger. Props can be different items like phones, different documents, or weapons. 

• Common Editing in the genre: cross-cutting, jump cuts, shot-reverse shot, eye-line match, action match, fade in/out 

• Common Sound in your genre: heavy, panicked breathing; “scare”/sting/diminished chords; percussive tones; high-pitched string instruments; heartbeats; whispers (especially distorted whispers); creaking doors; footsteps; wind whistling; blood curdling screams; Shepard tones; low-frequency drones, waterphone 

• Some examples of thriller movies are: A Quiet Place Part 2 (2021), Last Night in Soho (2021), The Substance (2024), The Woman in the Window (2022), Smile 2 (2024) 

• Some elements we would use from this genre would be tracking shots because it would suggest stalking. We also would use various sounds from this genre like panicked breathing. high pitched string instruments, or heartbeats. I also think the dark heavy shadows and lighting of the thriller genre is something we would also use. 

• An element that we don’t like from this genre would be weapons, as we want to keep our antagonist more mysterious. We also do not have access to a gun or fake gun. And using weapons like a knife could lead to hazards, and we want to limit accidents that could happen on set while filming.

Music Video

 This is my groups final product for the music video. For the project, I worked as the editor. I helped to decide what scenes should be used when. I also got to have a lot of creative input with how the final version would end up looking. I also acted a lot for the project. I think that my editing skills have definitely improved because of the time we spent on the project. I do think that my group could have worked better on their communication, but I still think that the project has turned out really well. I am really proud of all of the camera angles we used to create this video.   There were many mise en sc èn e elements used throughout our video that we put a lot of detail into. Overall, I am really happy with what we have created, and I think this group got a lot of good work done together. I can't wait for the next project!

Commercial Blog

This was my groups first project so far. I am really proud of the work we did on this. I think we could have improved on some of the lighting on the clips, but I am really impressed with how our production skills improved. I am very proud of the editing I did on this project and I think that in the future I will be able to make some really cool projects with the skills I’ve learned.
